Amazing Team
We have a wonderful mission team who have come to give love & aid wherever they can this week. Doctor Mike and Nurse Jana have seen too many patients to count and all the rest of us non-medical people have pitched in taking temps, weights, registration & triage, pharmacy, crowd control, and offering a comforting word.
We had 3 days of medical clinic - 2 really big days;-) but some patients were asked to return daily for dressing changes & re-checks ... and there were even a few house calls!
Many of the patients were not seriously ill, but were unable to find or afford medical care elsewhere. We saw a lot of people with respiratory infections, stomach ailments & parasites, and skin infections.
Some had more serious problems...
severe malnutrition, STD's, burns, cuts & other wounds, spina bifida & tumors.
We weren't able to help everyone which was hard for us to accept, but tried to counter that with rejoicing over those the Lord had brought to us & provided resources for that we were able to give some relief to. We pray that He will continue to heal and work in the lives & hearts of each precious one.
This little girl had a very serious burn on her arm. Her family had treated her by applying charcoal. They couldn't afford a clinic so they did what they thought would help & used what they had. We see a lot of that. It makes it very difficult to treat them- not only do you have to treat hte original problem, but also problems caused by the strange remedies. One of our cooks was burned (not severely-Praise God) this week when hot sauce spilled on her chest. Before we could get downstairs well-meaning helpers had already covered her burns in Blue Crest toothpaste!! I'm not sure what the toothpaste is supposed to do- but it seems to be used an awful lot to treat almost anything- like antibiotic salve! Our nurse had to work for an hour to clean the toothpaste off before the burn could be treated... and the charcoal was much, much worse! =(
I'll post tons more pics of medical plus the million other projects this AMAZING TEAM is accomplishing this week. It doesn't matter if they planned on doing sewing projects or teaching at the school, if they're needed to fill in as pharmacist or cook or welder, they've volunteered & kept right on smiling!
