The heart of a child ...

... written by Lexi
    (and Shelly)

My daughter Lexi, upon returning to school in September, was asked to write a journal entry on something special she did over the summer. Having gone on a trip to Haiti with me, she chose to write about her experience. She did such a great job that she was asked to read it in front of the class and share more about Haiti with them. Lexi is seven years old and in the second grade. But she "gets it" more than a lot of us do. Below is her journal entry, word for word ... spellings and all :)

"Over the sumer my mom and I went to Haiti. Haiti is pore but it was a fun trip. We slept at a orfng. Haiti has no rodes. It has for rodes roks and dert. Haiti housis are made from mud and sticks. Haiti is vary vary vary vary hot. We saw lots of chicins and cows and gotes and wild dogs. I made 3 new frends 1. Marlud 2. Jenafer 3. Wigins. Thay were like mostly the kids I played with. Haiti peple have no clos. Thay are luky if thay have 1 par of clos. And if thay have a penny thay are vary luky. We mite be adopting from Haiti. He is 16 months old and he is vary vary vary cute."

Lexi emptied her piggy bank to buy things for the children before we left for Haiti. We are going again this summer, but for a much longer length of time. The other night, she was counting all the money in her piggy bank and put well over half into our "Haiti fund." She cannot wait to get back there and spend time with the children. God has been working in her heart and right alongside mine, and she certainly feels called to serve Him in Haiti. She has photos of many of the children on her wall, as well as drawings they made for her. She speaks of them often and prays for them.

A while back she asked me, "mom, if it didn't cost a lot of money and take so long, would we adopt a lot of kids from Haiti?" She proceeded to list about 8 children from the "orfng" that she wants to have in our family. Every time we are in a store, she sees something she wants for someone in Haiti; every time we go out to eat, she mentions how much food they have in Haiti; everytime we talk about her birthday, she says she can't wait to spend it in Haiti with all 50 kids at her party!

I don't know who looks more forward to our time at the orphanage this summer, me or Lexi ... but one thing I do know is that Lexi's heart is there and she was touched beyond measure with her first experience in Haiti. I so look forward to watching her grow and learn more with her as we continue to spend more time in Haiti ... at the orphanage with these precious little ones.
