Not in our School

We had to go into the nearby town of Cabaret yesterday morning to do some business and came face-to -face with this event. The school is down the street from the place we were visiting and there was a hege crowd as parents were gathering to try and make sure their children were OK and take them home. The police had the school on lockdown, not letting anyone in or out. We were told that one child had been killed and 3 others were injured in the shooting. This is a very rare event in Haiti- while there is tons of gang related violence and Haiti is in general a dangerous place to live, school shootings are pretty much unheard of here. The news report is below.

Haitian student kills classmate in rare outburst of school violence in troubled country

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) _ A Haitian teen has shot and killed a classmate in a rare outbreak of school violence in the troubled country.

Police spokesman Garry Desrosier says the 16-year-old opened fire on the 13-year-old north of the capital in the town of Cabaret.

He threatened to shoot other students before fleeing and has not been arrested. The motive in Monday's shooting is unknown.

Violence plagues Haiti but has rarely penetrated schools in the impoverished Caribbean nation, especially those outside the capital.
