Yes, I know they really are, but prices have risen even more steeply in Haiti and other extremely poverty stricken countries. In Haiti, where families rarely get more than a cup of rice and a few beans daily, they are now not even able to afford enough rice for one meal each day. They have resorted to feeding their families small mud pies baked in the sun to fill the rumbling tummies of their children.
This Article details the food crisis and explains that Haiti as a nation with an already starving population is especially hard hit.
As always, children and those who are frail suffer the most. We, too, are feeling the crunch from the rising prices in Haiti, and were facing hard decisions concerning our budget. But God has blessed us through the faithfulness of another ministry to Haiti- Feed My Starving Children- which has begun to give aid to us in the form of vitamin fortified rice packets. This will stretch our food dollars to help offset the rising prices and hopefully we won't have to make cuts.
We still feel the hardship of Haiti and her people as daily we are approached by families who can no longer afford to feed their children, begging us to take them into the orphanage. We also feel it as more and more people come to us seeking assistance with medical problems. Often, they wait too long before looking for help as they have been forced to choose between feeding their family and medical care.
Every time I hand over a dollar for food- whether in the US or in Haiti- I am reminded of my neighbors who don't have that dollar to spend and have to make choices no parent should have to make. I realize how truly blessed I am and I am witnessing how faithful God is to provide for us all of our needs, according to His riches.
